Since beginning Occupational Therapy sessions with Rita Patterson in early 1991 we have noticed tremendous improvement in our son Brian.  Not only has he made steady progress in his handwriting abilities, but his overall “athletic” ability has also increased.  In addition, the sessions have vastly raised his levels of self-confidence and self-esteem.

When we initiated testing and treatment it was primarily at the suggestion of Brian’s teachers in order to work on severe handwriting difficulties.  Since that time our son has made great strides in his abilities, progressing through block printing and on to cursive.  He has begun to receive satisfactory ratings for his handwriting (as opposed to poor/needs improvement); indeed a big step, and his latest report card even contained a note from his teacher remarking on this improvement.

As his parents we have recently noticed an improvement in Brian’s overall coordination, balance, and dexterity.  These results, we believe are related to Mrs. Patterson’s approach in the OT sessions.  In addition, the home program which she developed for us greatly supplements the work she does.  These factors coupled with normal childhood activities and maturations, have led to noticeable increases in his abilities.

Along with improvements to the tangible, testable skills resulting from therapy sessions, Brian’s whole family has noticed an increase in his overall confidence level, something we also believe to be directly related to OT.  His willingness to try new things, to literally “climb to new heights” is a trait he had seldom shown before.  While still an overall anxious child, he now has greater self-confidence in his own abilities.  His periods of self-doubt have decreased as he engages in more and more “typical” activities.

My husband and I both unhesitatingly endorse the philosophies and techniques espoused by Mrs. Patterson.  In addition, we give her our highest personal recommendation.  Mrs. Patterson’s knowledge, abilities and professionalism, coupled with her warm personality and obvious affection for children has resulted in a highly satisfying, very beneficial experience for both our son and our family.

Sincerely,
Diane J. White
